Dooms Day Drill is a
fictional account of a small town Mayor’s obsession with protecting himself,
his family and the residents of his municipality from the violent, destructive
effects of terrorism, natural disasters and social unrest. In light of recent
tragic events, his level of anxiety and fear had reached a heightened state of
daily worry, panic with the thought of an unprovoked attack or natural
disaster. He wasn’t going to allow that to happen, not on his watch. So Mayor
Melvin Ellis developed a plan he believed would give the residents of
Millersville the best chance for survival by creating a Dooms Day Drill. First
build an elaborate, underground shelter outside of the town, but easily and
quickly accessible. Second, create transportation capable of mass, rapid
transport. Third, readiness, assuring residents’ knowledge in crisis response,
so he scheduled mock drills to be held the last weekend of every other month. But
people questioned his over budgeted, time consuming, disruptive plan, forcing
the mayor to prove his strategy for survival was lifesaving. With the members
of the town council, he scheduled a surprise readiness drill to catch the
citizens of Millersville completely off guard, assuring a legitimate response
to the perceived threat of attack. But the actions of the town’s drunk and
public nuisance Justin Charles Jetter, had plans of his own.
